iOS No background service mechanism?

I was told there is no way to implement a background service in iphone, living as long as the telephony service or messaging service. Is that true?

There are Services in android for such intention. I want an iphone counterpart.

The stock OS won't run any background service not created by Apple themselves (such a telephony).

It's not a matter of maturity, it's a conscious design decision.
