I was under the impression that my computer was supposed to have a backlit keyboard. It appears not to have one (unless there is some setting that I need to configure).

I have a 11" MacBook Air that was purchased in June, 2011. This was before they released the Macs with sandy bridge processors. My processor is core 2 duo 1.4ghz.

In the 2011 models Apple removed the backlit keyboards.

i thought they took it out of the 2010 models but then added it in the 2011 models.

???

No... the late 2010 - mid 2011 models are the only Airs without backlit keyboards. The OP probably just isn't turning them on.

no, the op bought his in june 2011, about a month before the current models (the ones with the backlit keyboards) came out. i'm thinking his air doesn't have the backlighting.

True. The Core 2 Duo MacBook Air sold from October 2010 to July 2011 does not have a backlit keyboard. All other models, including the Core i5/i7 models sold since July 2011 have backlighting.
