No bars/ no service before activation?

Does your iphone show zero bars and or no service on the top before you activated it? Im freaking out here, and dont know whether to activate if I really have no service.

No bars on my phone and I KNOW we have coverage where I live.

Same here. Looks like I have maybe 1/2 a bar. I was worried too b/c my Sprint Treo has 4 bars .
