No basic Dictionary app?

I was surprised that Apple didn't make its Dictionary app portable for the iPhone (or that there isn't an American Heritage one, or something comparable). There are plenty of foreign language phrase books, which are nice, but I don't see a comprehensive English language dictionary app, which is one of the most useful apps I can imagine.

Is there one out there I'm not seeing?

yeah I don't see one either. there are several "basic" apps like this that seem to be missing. I'm kind of surprised.

then there are tons of duplicate apps like all the social networking ones

Haha not to mention the excessive duplicates aimed at making tipping easier and also the to-do apps.
There is an app made by Ultralingua called the English Dictionary and Thesaurus that seems full fledged but it costs $38.99NZ which ain't cheap.

You people need to give it time. The appstore has been out for a total of what, three days? I'm sure most of what we are requesting will be released, as will better versions of what is already out.

Patience has nothing to do with it. They released the SDK back in March. This has given people plenty of time to think up app ideas, get them going and submitted. It's Apple's job to weed out the bad ones and give us a list of the rest. I can understand wanting to give everyone a chance by having several apps that do the same thing but in a slightly different way, but come on... also, some apps should just be a default that Apple provided. A dictionary app is definitely something that should have been thought of

Yeah, finally. Even though the text formatting is a bit broken, it's now made my iPod touch much more useful I like how it generates a list of possible words because it helps when I'm spelling a word phonetically.
