Unless you are using the same username and password, or you have the username and password saved in your keychain. You will need to click the "Connect As" button on the top right corner of the Finder.
If you are doing that, and it is still failing. Check your Firewall on the host machine, my guess is that is blocking you.

I don't know what you mean. I am trying to backup my macbook by way of using the external hard drive on my Imac so I won't have to kill time by disconnecting it and connecting it to my macbook and backing it up that way. So, I hear that through File Share I can access my macbook and back the who macbook up through File Share on my iMac and use Time Machine to do it.
I need a step by step instruction on how to do this.
Ok, which computer do I follow the instructions on? Do i go to my macbook or my iMac? Currently, my external hard dive is connected to my imac, I want to access the files on my macbook on my iMac so I can back them up on the external hard drive that I have connected to my iMac using time machine. Which one do I follow the directions on?
