No contacts appear in Time Machine Address book backups

I am using 10.5.8. Tonight, for some unknown reason, all of my contacts disappeared. I tied to send an invitation and My Card was no longer in the Address Book, though all of the other addresses appeared to be. I added a My Card, sent the invite. When I came back, all of the contacts with the exception of My Card were gone. I tried using Time Machine with the Address Book, but all previous versions only showed the single My Card. Any ideas?
