So I bought an ATT Elevate mobile hotspot with no-contract obligation to use with my iPad 2. When I took it into the ATT corporate store to activate the SIM card the sales rep told me the only no-contract data plan available for Elevate was their $50/1GB a month plan. Furthermore, he told me if I didn't use the data within 90 days the plan would zero out and I'd lose my $50. Plus, I had to pay $36 each time I reactivated the month-by-month, no-contract plan. This seems to contradict everything I've read stating the no-contract data plan for Elevate is $50/5GB a month with no activation fee and no expiration date. He insisted this is the only no-contract data plan they offer for Elevate and it's different than the no-contract data plan for the iPad 3G models.

True? If so, is Verizon's no-contract data plan for their JetPack mifi different?

VZW does not off a pay as you option for their Mifi. I just asked that very question this past weekend.

I have a backup MiFi from Virgin. When I bought it they had $10 and $20 options, but now the minimum is $35 for2GB.

So, my VZW iPad 3 has replaced it with the $20/1GB plan. Even with occasion use tethering to my laptop or the Wifi only iPad I still haven't been close to 1GB of usage.

So you're saying Verizon doesn't offer any no-contract, pay-as-you-go data plans? My research says they do and it costs $50/5GB a month. Whether or not there's an activation fee is unclear, however.

Can anyone else confirm the availability of a VZN mifi no-contract data plan?
