What is going on with the video content? First it's way slow to get the library increased, and don't get me started on the lack of closed captioning on most movies, but now there is no explanation as to why some new releases are purchase only. Fine, it's the studio's fault, I'm sure many will say. I still hate it. I don't want to purchase a movie like No Country for Old Men, I want to rent it!!

But I agree, every movie should be rent or own.
I understand your frustration, but unfortunately the distributor of No Country for Old Men, Miramax, has only agreed to sell their content through iTunes, not rent.
Until they reach that agreement, nothing can be done.
For what it's worth, I also am interested in renting No Country for Old Men, but really have no interest in paying $15 to see it.

Mirimax is owned by The Walt Disney Company. If Steve Jobs can't get Mirimax to play ball with Apple TV, then I'm losing faith in the potential of this rental thing. Apparently the whole process of getting the movie legally situated and ready on iTunes is about as complex as fusion....at least I hope it is considering progress so far.
Apple has to wait 1 month after the DVD is released to rent the movie, this was stated in the keynote.

It was quite clearly stated in the Macworld keynote that every single major studio was on board with rentals.

You're right. The distributors onboard are: 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros., Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios, and Sony Pictures Entertainment. ...I had forgotten that Miramax is part of the Walt Disney Group.
I'm sure you are all correct. I didn't realize that we would be able to purchase at the same time as DVD release, but no rental until 30 days after.

Downloads are such a laughably small part of their current revenue, it's no wonder they don't give it much thought. Disney, for example, saw iTunes Store sales of $123 million since 2006 which is a rounding error compared to the $35 billion in total revenues they brought in.
What is the deal with the other movies that are only available for purchase (see Top Movies on iTunes)? Most of those have been out for a while...
I'd want to rent it because AFAIK if you want HD, you have to rent; you can't buy HD movies from Apple. I got AppleTV to stream my music library and to rent HD movies (Netflix blu-ray are often unplayable due to scratching and there's no local blu-ray rentals and most movies I only want to watch once or twice anyway, so buying a $25-30 blu-ray disk doesn't make much sense to me when I can rent the movie for less than the price of one matinee ticket. In fact, I haven't been to a movie theater since I got my 720P Panasonic LCD projector and a 93" screen with a 6.1 surround setup a little over a year ago. It's more fun to watch at home. I can wait an extra 3-5 months and watch it at home. It'd be nice if they could rent HD from Apple at the same time as the theaters get it. I know rumors about simulcast-releases (with a few non-major ones have already done it) keep flying around, but Hollywood has this "sell them teh same thing twice" mentality they can't quite shake. Well, I've been voting with my wallet and staying away from majorly overpriced movie theaters (some local ones want like $10-12 a ticket now, which is what the DVD usually sells for the first week on sale or after a couple of years regular price...sheesh).
TV with MactheRipper and Handbrake but it would not work. I tried it a few different ways with no luck. Anyone know if this can be done with this movie?+1
Handbrake 0.92 has been incredible at handing anything you can throw at it. I haven't used MTR or AnyDVD on it yet.

I guess I will give it another try. I tried it both ways. with MTR and HB... But neither worked for me at the time. I will try again. Hopefully it will work. It kept telling me in MTR that it had bad sectors and it ripped in in HB the first time, but when I went to view it, it was messed up in the playback.
On a non technical note, let me just say this about No Country For Old Men and I promise what I'm about to say won't spoil anything. No Country For Old Men is a really violent film with an often slow moving indie film vibe and it's really cool. That said, if you see Tommy Lee Jones sitting at a table talking to his wife about the two dreams he had the night before, STOP THE FILM IMMEDIATELY! Then make up your own ending to the movie and it will be far superior to the one the Cohen Brothers came up with.

Yes the ending is not a typical american resolution, but I think he (spoiler) can't take being retired and goes after him we just don't get to see that part...
Also I am defintely on the bandwagon of stop dicking around with the downloads. physical media is disappearing fast. blu-ray? don't care it's just speed bump to what most of us want. there's no packaging involved. I couldn't care less about extra features. I occasionally watch them once but would rather pay less to just have the movie itself. Right now I buy based on whether the DVD is less then the download. I started doing that when music went that way it's such a pain to convert every time anyway I'd rather skip the step and have it in the format I'll use it in anyway. If I buy a dvd tuesday through thursday at target or wal-mart it is the cheapest that movie will be for at least 6 months, BUT I'd rather download it and am WILLING to pay to do so.

Bad Sectors Message with MTR
The same exact thing happened to me with MTR...I tried just HB the second time around and just synced it to my AppleTV...Will let ya know !!

Using Handbrake alone worked fine, using Mac the Ripper first, bad sectors problems..

I ordered the No Country DVD (not BD) from Amazon. I then used Handbrake to rip my disk and create an MP4 file. I was then able to play it in iTunes and sync it to my Apple TV. I did all of this directly from the DVD without the slightest bit of trouble. I have done the same with a bunch of other disks I own and have had no trouble with any of them.
