After a really impressive thunderstorm during which my power went off for a second, my custom desktop is having issues. It’s connected via a surge protected power strip, and there’s no evidence of anything burning or melting or smelling bad, so that might be a red herring.

It fails the POST, saying there’s no CPU fan. I opened up the case, spun the CPU fan with my fingers, unplugged it from the motherboard and plugged it back in, turned on the PC with the case open and saw the fan spin. I reconnected the monitor, and Windows started up ok. There was a Windows update, which forced a restart, but now it won’t start, failing the POST saying there’s no CPU fan... what should I do now?

I started it again, with the case open, I saw the CPU fan spinning, but it failed the POST saying there was no CPU fan. I went to fan control, and it showed the actual RPM! I set the profile to turbo, and the minimum to 500RPM, and since then it’s been ok. I’ll look into updating the bios, but it isn’t that easy.
