No Display on PC Monitor from Mini

Hi,

Can anyone help me please? I finally picked up a compatible used Mac Mini for a little project I'm involved in and as a way to test out Apple computing (I'm a complete Apple newb). I got a mini vga cable to connect my old (ish) PC monitor. I can hear the Mini boot up (I get the chime) but I'm not getting any signal on the monitor, all I see is 'no signal'. I saw a thread on a similar line to this but the only answer to the query was to disconnect the monitor and reboot the mini, then reconnect the monitor. I tried this and it didn't work. I know the monitor works fine (I've been running my laptop off it) so can't understand why I can't get the mini to display on the screen.

Would be grateful for any ideas.

That's a DVI mini.
