No educational discount in UK

I was a bit dissapointed to find that the Higher Education area of the Apple Store (accesible from any university campus machine) lists the iPad prices (pre-order) as identical to the regular retail prices.

I assumed they would be pushing the iPad at students and teaching users !!

There is an Educational discount if you buy a bulk package of 10, with only one set of documentation and plain packaging. It's only about $200 off. Not sure re UK.

Umm, there's very little point in pushing it at students and teachers if you can't meet demand... Right now Apple aren't able to meet demand at full list price, offering a reduced cost to education users makes no sense for them. Oh I'm almost sure there'll be some sort of deal put in place once Apple have had time to gauge long-term demand in the market and adjust their outpur accordingly but it won't be for a while and it might not be in the form we'd expect.

There isn't an edu discount in the US, so why would you expect one in the UK?

I was disappointed but not surprised that the iPad didnt get the edu discount. I think its because they realise that at the moment it isnt the best option for a student. to get any real work done at the very least you need a notebook running a proper OS. Maybe when the iPad has evolved a bit they might but at the moment no. The iPad is more of a secondary device which has to sync back to a real one, I plan on using mine to take notes and do bits of work in pages while I'm on the go but t do any heavy work my MBP will be used. Also, as its brand new they dont really need to discount it for anyone, they will sell millions and millions of them.

In their defense, Apple also gives us great deals on computers via the HE program.

You don't get a corporate discount either. I get up to 17% off (depending on the product) through work but this hasn't been applied to the iPad yet. I'm guessing it's because it's a pre-order, it might appear after the release date.

Apple withdrew educational discount on iPods years ago, choosing only to offer discount on computer sales. With that in mind I'm not surprised they're not offering educational discount on the iPad since it fits into the same category as the iPhone/iPod etc.

Even on their Employee Purchase Plan there is no discount :-/

Really kinda annoying, but eh, if I compare it to the ipod touch and what not it probably would only be like $30 off for me anyway...

Because, historically, they have given great discounts on their computers to education...in the UK....that's why.

Seriously, I think you have to make a distinction between Mac OS computers and iPhone OS computers if you want to be accurate. Apple, historically, had never offered EDU discounted iPhone OS computers.
