Hi All,

I bought a cheap Mac Pro 1,1 for £300 off eBay with 32gb RAM, 1tb HDD and a 1gb ATi 5770, I need to reinstall OS X but it's a non flashed 5770 card which doesn't show the boot screen, is there any other way of installing OS X as I'm pretty screwed at the moment :(

Thanks in advance

Paul

Find yourself a cheap used Apple Nvidia 7300 GT or ATI Radeon X1900 XT on eBay! Always handy when doing maintenance or installations.

Or read these info's for workarounds : https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1676648/

Good luck with your install! ~ Cheers

Thanks for the reply, I guess I'll just have to get an old card for boot purposes, people selling the cards you mentioned want around £100 which isn't exactly cheap, I've found some 4870's and GeForce 8800's in Germany going cheap on eBay, although auctions are in German the pictures show the apple boot screen so they seem ok :)

Thanks Lou, problem is I can't follow those steps as the 5770 is the only card I have, I'm going to get a replacement card and sell this one I think as flashing seems such a faff :(

Hi PaulCon. Might be better to go for the Radeon 4870. I use to have the 1.1 Mac Pro and the Nvidia 7300GT card died twice. As you can see its design, it does not have a cooling fan and usually the capacitor would expire. The Radeon 1900XT is also not too good a card. When it gathers dusts, it stops working and you need to blow out the dusts. Here is a discussion about the Radeon 1900XT of various problems

If it comes with OS X already I think you can pick the startup disk and reboot, after the installer loads your display should kick in if the drivers come with the version of OS X you're installing.

I did this twice with a USB stick for Mountain Lion & Mavericks when I had a non-flashed Nvidia GTS 250.

Exactly. 10.7+ installer will work with 5770 this way.
