I have sip disabled, 5,1 firmware mounted on desktop. Then I try to open the Firmware updater and it says it requires an internet connection. I just can't fix the internet connection. I tried connecting using bluetooth PAN to my macbook pro to get internet access and that didn't work either. This is a recently purchased 4,1. I have a freshly installed El Cap at 10.11.6. How can I flash without using internet? Alternatively, how can i get the ethernet or wifi working? Bluetooth is working currently, but the option to connect to another Bluetooth PAN device for internet access is grayed out stating that there aren't any other devices available...but there are. My MBP is running catalina, if that makes a difference, and i set it up in sharing is sys prefs, sharing wifi over bluetooth.

how can i get the ethernet or wifi working

The MP 4,1 and 5,1 got 2 ethernet connectors at the back .
The easiest way would be to connect the MP with a ethernet cable directly to the router.
No need to setup anything , no passwords ,just connecting the cable will do.

Alternatively, if your MP came with a (working) WIFI card, you could log in to your router.

Ethernet jacks are not working, they do not detect the ethernet cable. Says "network cable unplugged." No wifi option is available on the network page. Even when I try to add a connection, it doesn't give me the option to use the wifi interface. Just Firewire, Eth 1 & 2, and Bluetooth PAN.

I've read through the thread on the Firmware Updater tool and I've tried several of the troubleshooting options. The problem is that the original .scpt file in the package contents was distributed as run-only and is not editable with a script editor, which is necessary because the program runs a ping to the apple servers before you can proceed with the software's options to flash firmware. I have all of the files needed, just no internet. I followed this guide and it wasn't successful either. I couldn't get the program to mount the firmware updater on the RAM of the MP.

I have a new broadcom chip and everything to update the wifi in the tower, but I didn't want to install all of that because ultimately I'll probably have to remove this motherboard and install it in a different MP case because the case is severely damaged from a drop by the person I bought it from, so it doesn't really stand up straight. So first, I wanted to get it to 5,1 before I start doing surgery just in case it's not a viable machine.

Do you have an amazon link to one that supports Mac OS? They all seem to only support windows.

I've bought the Sonnet PCIe gigabit cards in the past but those seem to be discontinued. I'd probably try this now: https://www.amazon.com/Realtek-Chipset-Ethernet-Interface-Software/dp/B007MWYCG2
The Realtek chipset should be supported natively in macOS.
This one is even less expensive: https://www.amazon.com/Rosewill-100...04F34ONC/ref=psdc_13983711_t3_B007MWYCG2?th=1

Done, thanks for the idea. Hopefully this is a solution I won't have to waste anymore time on.

I've plugged in the pci-e ethernet card and plugged in my known working ethernet cable but the mac didn't connect automatically. In System Report I can see the ethernet card under PCI, but it says "Driver Installed-No" as opposed to the Nvidia GT120 listed = "Driver Installed-Yes." I went to their website to download a driver but their newest driver is for Mac OS 10.7. I tried to install it anyway, and it gave an error that said it couldnt be installed. Also, in Sys Prefs > Network, I can't add an additional interface for the pci-e ethernet, it still just gives me the standard options when adding interfaces (Eth1, Eth2, Firewire, Bluetooth PAN).

Any other ideas on how to connect this tower to the internet? Or how to avoid connecting to the internet in the first place (workaround for firmware flasher)?

Restoring a MP 4,1 i bought a used wifi card (not OEM Apple) that works perfectly for €10,- on eBay.
It's an BCM94322MC like the original a/b/g/n card.
Maybe that could be the cheapest way to get internet since the ethernet connectors dont work.
