Ah so it's yet another way to do unproductive things on a device that is supposed to cater to productivity? Nice.
Farmville is a pretty poor example of the shortcomings of the iPad.
Seriously, apart from crappy facebook games and porn, what else uses flash?

Well, that's is a disappointment. But you can always convert your movies to H.264 if you want to.
Look, Flash sucks, yes... but over 10% of websites have flash on them today. HTML5 might replace it... someday, but that day is not today. The very first website that Steve Jobs brought up on the iPad was the New York Times and a 20% section of it had a big broken plug-in box on it... no flash. Sorry, but if Steve is to imply that this new device does browsing better than an iPhone OR a laptop (his words) then it can't leave out 10% of my browsing experience.

It's not a compromise. Apple wants Flash to NOT be a standard. Apple are doing what they think they have to supplant it. Deal with it.
And I saw it would have been a huge mistake to have Flash. If anything the NYT dropped the ball by not having utilized HTML5 prior to the start of the demo.
It's funny how I can watch more videos that utilize HTML5 and not see my battery level drop; yet I can watch those same videos via Flash and watch my battery level drop like a junky snorting a line of cocaine.
So, YES, thank you Steve for not supporting Flash yet again.
Just as a far-off example, there was a time when EVERYONE rode around on horses or walked to get to where they needed to go. If everyone had the same mentality then that some of you have about Flash, we would still be walking and riding horses to get around - today.
And that's great when/if they win 5 years from now. Right now though it makes the iPad a tougher sell.
Somebody has to push the use of HTML5, if Apple supports flash then developers won't adjust there sites.
I thought the point of this device is so we can surf the Internet, play games, and read books. Other than a watered down version of a office suite that few people use, where's the productivity here? This is a device to consume media on.
To who? Techies? The vast majority of people will have no clue about that nor really care. Sure, they'll get pissed when Hulu won't run (and who's to say they don't go HTML5 or create an app) but will still keep and love the device.
You need to remember, users of tech message boards are not representative of the public at large.
And that's the interesting question: is the iPad such a provocative device that it will help to destroy Flash or is Flash so ingrained that it helps to destroy the iPad. I have no idea which will give first.
To my wife. She hates using computers. I told her about the iPad and then she asked if she could play Farmville. Yes, this is a problem that might fix itself down the road, but right now it is a sticking point to exactly the people who are the target market
As much as Farmville is a poor example of a shortcoming in the iPad, it is also a perfect example. There are MILLIONS of people that play Farmville. Many of them do it daily. To put it in perspective, more people play Farmville in one day than bought an iPhone last quarter.
Whether or not it is a stupid time-waster (which I agree that it is), by excluding Flash and thus games like Farmville, Apple has reduced their market for potential buyers by millions. And the less people that buy these things the worse for all of us. I can understand not having Flash on iPod and I can understand people's dislike for Flash, but if Apple wants to create a must-have device that everyone wants, then it has to do what everyone wants it to, and that, at least in this day and age includes playing stupid Flash games.

I think this situation is a good example of how those shorcommings will effect iPad sales:
Me explaining my Girlfriend what the ipad is (she is a total Computer noob) , she was like "wow thats awesome so I can play Farmville on this thing?!?! " i am like... no no flash , "so thats the same on my ipod Touch then?" I go "yea pretty much, but You can write Documents and create keynotes on this" seh goes "hmm so thats good for college, I don't have to lug around my Laptop anymore, I can use data from Wikipedia to create slides WOHOO" "well no you can't there is no opening more than 1 app at a time"
