Hi there,

I have the following machine:
2016 15" Macbook Pro
2.6GHz Quad-Core i7
16GB LPDDR3
Radeon Pro 450 2GB

macOS Catalina Version 10.15.7

Connected to a Dell U2720Q 4k display via USB Type-C.
I get the full 90W Charging and display at 4k@60Hz 30-bit colour.

When I go into: Apple > System Preferences > Displays, there is no option for High Dynamic Range. I can also see in my monitor's OSD that the monitor is not receiving a HDR signal.

If I bootcamp into Windows using the same laptop, same cable and same monitor, I can enable HDR in the Windows Colour Settings (also 4k@60Hz 30-bit colour), and my monitor's OSD does confirm that I'm receiving a HDR signal.

Any help here on how to enable HDR in macOS? I recently got an iPhone 12 Pro, and I can't view the videos/photos I've taken in HDR on my monitor. Despite the fact the hardware is clearly capable of it.

TL;DR
Using the same Monitor, cable + laptop, I have no HDR option in macOS, but I do bootcamping in to Windows. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Did you end up finding a solution for this?
I have a similar issue with my Macbook Pro 2019 and a Sony XBR-X800H43 4K TV.
In my case I'm using a CableMatters (201088) adapter usb-c to hdmi that supports HDR with a 8k HDMI cable

I don't see an option for HDR in System Preferences --> Displays

From what I can tell I have the correct hardware to support this but I can only 4k@60Hz 30bit color

This is from System Information --> Graphics/Displays --> Radeon Pro 555X

----
Displays:
SONY TV *00:
Resolution: 7680 x 4320 (4320p/8K UHD 2 - 8K Ultra High Definition)
UI Looks like: 3840 x 2160 @ 60Hz
Framebuffer Depth: 30-Bit Color (ARGB2101010)
Main Display: Yes
Mirror: Off
Online: Yes
Rotation: Supported
Automatically Adjust Brightness: No
Connection Type: DVI or HDMI
Adapter Firmware Version: 0.00
Television: Yes

-----

On the TV I set the HDMI signal format to Enhanced and enabled HDR on this HDMI port

I have the following machine:
2019 15" Macbook Pro
2.6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7
16 GB 2400 MHz DDR4
Radeon Pro 555X 4GB

I tested some DisplayPort to HDMI/DVI adapters and didn't get HDR with most of them. #21

I ended up buying a Belkin USB-C to HDMI Adapter (supports Dolby Vision) model Number F2CU038dsWHTAPL.

Its a bit pricey but now I can see and use the HDR option

You see the HDR option, but what happens when you go to YouTube and play HDR content? Does it show "HDR" or "4K"? I see the HDR option as well, but when I try to play HDR content on YouTube from my display, it only plays in 4K. But when I move my browser to my MacBook Pro 16" and refresh the page, it plays in HDR.

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)
AMD Radeon Pro 5300M 4 GB
ASUS ProArt PA32UC external display connected via a Thunderbolt 3 cable (also tried a DP 1.4 cable with the same result)
macOS Big Sur 11.0.1

I am also not able to see HDR option in my DELL U2720Q with monterey. Any idea why is that so? Tried with both USB to USB C and USB C to display port cables. Still the same result.

For those that are going into an HDMI input, give the Apple 1st-party USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter a try. I've tried many different cables, dongles, etc. and the 1st party Apple one has been the only one that has been able to give me an HDR option on 4k TVs (Sony 55x850D, TCL R646). Has worked for me on 2018 15" MBP, 2018 11" iPad Pro, M1 Mac Mini, etc.

Some dongles require a firmware update to support HDR for macOS. #21
