Hi everyone,

I've just upgrade my old 2015 MBP 15" to a new 2023 MBP 16". Great machine which I really enjoy.

But a little "problem" is driving me nuts: The internal display of the new MBP can display HDR content. And so it does for all HDR videos recorded with my iPhone 13 Pro. But it seems that the Photos app supports HDR only for videos. All HDR photos that my iPhone or my iPad display in HDR mode are not displayed in HDR on my MBP ... and look rather dull.

Is this by design that photos are not supported? Or do I miss something?

The help of the Photos application mentions an HDR option but it is not available on my MBP - and based on the help it is only available with an Apple Pro Display XDR.

Best regards,
Stephan

Same to me, wondering why there's no local HDR effect for photos taken by iPhone via native Photos app, I remember it should be able to show HDR photo when I played with old M1 MacBook Pro 16 last time in Apple Store. I also couldn't find any setting related to this and no post from Google can be found with regards to the similar issue as well.

Just registered to say I have exactly the same problem, my M1 Pro 16" would let me choose ""Use the HDR capability of your display" but my 14" M2 Pro does not, it's really frustrating.

I just did a test, HDR videos taken with my phone work, but not HDR photos, it seems the option has been removed to show photos, for no good reason...

I made a post on the support community, sent feedback. Has anyone else got HDR photos to work on an M2 pro MacBook Pro?

By the way - it seems that the latest macOS version 13.4 has fixed the problem. On my 2023 MBP 16" the option to display Full HDR images is now available in the photos application.

Can confirm, looks fixed and photos are indeed more vivid now like they should be.

Though videos still seem to show much brighter.

Have you guys tried using the preview.app? Im not sure why, but Im pretty certain that preview doesn't show the full dynamic range for images taken on iPhone. Only on the Photos.app, do images show in HDR.

Also using a 16" early-2023 MBP. In the Photos app, photos are SDR when in the grid but when I click them to full view, they go HDR.
