If you bought your PB from either an Apple Store or the Apple website, they have a record of your serial number and purchase date, and should fix you up without hassle. I bought my PB online from Apple, and when my combo drive failed after about 8 months, the local Apple store took it without a receipt and fixed it in two days.

If you bought it from MacMall or one of the other online/catalog places, you might have to go through them for the repair/replacement.

I hate going to the Apple store. All the people work there are so rude and for some reason look down at customers.

All I ever hear is Apple workers being all snotty and talking to customers as if they are so "above" them. I've seriously had to leave before going off on them after over hearing some of the things said to customers.

No one needs to be talked to that way, especiialy by some little twurp making min. wage at the mall (no offense to any apple workers here - but I've yet to meet a polite one).

One time, I watched this young kid, maybe 12, take his iPod to the genius bar because it wouldn't work. The kids dad was behind him, and every thing was going ok since Dad was doing the talking. The dad walked over and looked at something, and the Apple employee flat out tricked the kid and said he dropped his iPod (basicly putting words in his mouth - the kid didn't say a thing). The dad comes back, apple dude says 'Sorry sir - your son told me he dropped the iPod. We can't fix it.' You should've seen the look on the kid's face. If I didn't have an iMac being fixed by them, I'd definitely laid into that guy.

I don't know who they think they are, but that kind of stuff really makes me mad, and I see it EVERYTIME I'm in there.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience at the Apple Store. The story regarding the kid's iPod definitely is not cool.

However in the Apple Store's defense, I must say I have quite an opposite experience when I go. The employee's are very polite and are willing to help you with anything you may need.

Not saying you're not telling the truth, just saying that I have had good experiences in contrast to your experience.

my apple store is not in a mall, a strip mall kind. Some apple workers are nice, like the man who help my brother get his iMAc g4. . Im sure seem people who come in the stores need to be talked down to. I was in there and a mac asked " but this can still get me to yahoo.com right?" if i worked at the apple store( and would liek to but im to young) i sure i would talk down to some people.

I personally have had good expirences with them - nothing fabulous, but nothing horrible. But from what I over-hear/over-see happening to other customers, it definitely is not cool.

Maybe they try to take advantage of people that don't know a lot about computers, I don't know. But even then, I don't know why they would - it's not like they are going to get paid any differently if they go out on a limb and fix something lol.

I also like going to my Apple Store. It's since I know more than the majority of the staff there. The only exception is the manager. He knows much more than I could ever imagine about audio and video on the Mac. I think that's why he's the manager. The Apple rep that sold me my iMac runs away from me each time I go in to the store. :D

They just need to work on helping costumers a bit faster in the store.

This actually happened to me, but not at an Apple Store (Fry's Electronics). This customer wanted some help from an employee that was walking by, and the employee rudely said something to this effect, "umm I'm with a customer right now". He's lucky that wasn't me, I would have gave him a piece of my mind.

This is how I see Fry's. Where I go most of the employee's don't know squat about computers. I mean one day I was with a buddy looking for a digital camera. So an employee comes up to us and asks us if we have any questions. Long story short this employee totally emphasized that this digi cam was for "All Weather". That's all he was pretty much saying about it the whole time, "all weather", "all weather". To me it seems like they think we didn't know nothing about digital cameras (btw: we didn't buy the digi cam). I totally love Fry's, but do not go there if you don't know what your doing because those employees will practically tell you anything you want to hear just to make a sale.

Ok that's my rant  :D

When I had an issue with my TiBook, I was so proud that I still had the original purchase and apple care paperwork, but when I went to the apple store, all the guy did was take my pbook, type in a few numbers, and say yep it's covered.

Did not even want to see my paperwork!

Damn those guys, they then had the nerve to replace the logic board at no cost to me.

Wow, I haven't had nearly that kind of experience at several different Apple Stores in southern California. Everyone I've ever dealt with (sales, genius bar, etc) has been friendly and helpful. The worst thing I can say about them is I almost always know more than they do... :D

I wonder if it's a problem with the management at the particular store in your area?

I'm embarrassed to say that I have only had negative experiences whenever I go into the Valley Fair store (in San Jose). For the first 5 times or so, I just assumed that no employees helped me because the place was swarming w/ people. But then I started going when the place was pretty devoid of other customers and the people still wouldn't help me. :( But the 'frisco store's employees asked if I needed help even though it was packed-- so I guess it's just a location thing.

I've only been to the Tampa and Jacksonville stores, but I've never been impressed with the service. One of the managers rang me up one time and never said thankyou (or anything similar to the word) nor did he smile. I've worked retail many years in the past and know what makes the customer happy. "The little things."
Also, does anyone feel like the Apple stores are trying to be TOO hip. Half the kids in the Jacksonville, FL store look like they should be in an indie rock band or backup dancers for Brittney. Any thoughts?

tech4all,

which apple stores do you go to, and which fry's?

I agree that fry's employees are incompetent, but they sort of taylor to the people who know exactly what they are looking for, rather than the browsers.

I have mixed feelings on apple employees. I have run into some who are obnoxiously persistant but can offer me no information I dont already know, and some bashfull employees who once you worm it out of them, can share tips and tricks that make your day.

I've had mixed experiences when going to Apple stores. Some salespeople know what they are talking about but most don't. It seems that the majority of store employees are trained in the art of selling the iPod.

I just recently bought my G5 - the day the new ones were released. I knew there would be a price reduction so I madly began ringing stores asking about old stock. Only one store in Sydney knew what was going on but it was out of my way and I couldn't get there to grab it.

In desperation I then rang a department store to see if they had any old 2.5's still in stock and to my surprise they had a few. I asked for the price and they had already reduced them for clearance. About $4000 later I had my new Mac and the salesperson tried to sell me some RAM. 'I can give you 1Gb for $250 installed - we will do it here while you wait' he says. Well, at the time it sounded great but if I didn't tell him about the memory requirements of a G5 - being they need to be installed in pairs - I would have walked out the door with a G5 with a 1gig stick of PC RAM installed. Obviously the dude had no idea what I was talking about so I just left with the G5.

Imagine if I was a first time Apple user... Get home, start it up and then one day click on 'About this Mac' and find that the RAM that was installed isn't there...

Apple should train these people more thoroughly. They can sell iPods and stock equipment but when It comes to adding a little flavor to your Mac it is often uncharted territory for them!!

Oh the Horror! But seriously I hope the apple store opening on Saturday doesn’t have stuck up people working there (well they probably will but not the majority). It sounds like there are just a few stores out of 100+ that have stuck up people. The people at North Mich. Ave. were very nice and friendly.

Just like any other people can have a bad day. Yes, it is your job to treat customers politely and with respect. Sometimes it just isn't easy. At my local Apple Store my wife & I have been pleased with the treatment that that we've received. If it becomes a recurring thing, then the manager should be made aware of the situation. Would also feel bad about getting the person in trouble. That is why it should be something that happens more than once.
