Seriously Apple? I understand no multitasking, but no homescreen wallpapers for us 3G owners? I'm tired as hell of that plain black background.

Other than that, the beta runs really smooth on my 3G. Too bad I can't develop my app to utilize the background services until I upgrade to the new version this summer.

iPhone OS 4.0 BETA 1.

Beta being the operative word.

This is not, nor even close to, final release software.

It is provided to developers to test and debug their apps on a physical device.

The beta is optimised for the iPhone 3GS.

Not all features on lower spec devices are set.

If the iPhone 3G can do Folders, with the new interface that goes with it, then it'll get home screen wallpapers.

People REALLY need to put 2 + 2 together and come up with 4 ... there is absolutely no way that a 480x320 still image cannot be displayed behind the apps when it's already allowed on the lock screen and behind the phone interface for your contacts during calls should you add a photo to your contact.

As the beta expands, more features will be added ... of that I am certain.

I could of course be wrong, but I think this dev beta is specifically meant to show 3GS users first and foremost. It is, after all, the flagship model ... for now.

You're gonna develop an app, but can't search the forums, or even go through the 1st page?

I started typing this thread, then left my computer for a while to let the dog out, and hit post when I got back. I made a boo boo.

lol.. when did you type it, yesterday? :p

just teasing you.. but ya, it's not working for some, but apparently some have it working on the 3G.

I FOUND A WAY TO GET MULTITASKING/WALLPAPERS WORKING SMOOTHLY ON A 3G!

Some of you may have already figured this out, but I thought I'd say it anyway. After trying the Beta 1 jailbreak (worked, but MT/HW slowed it WAY down) and Beta 2 (still no MT/HW), I played around with it and found a very usable solution. Put only 4 icons/folders per homescreen. It sounds so simple, but it works nearly perfectly. If you can live with either flipping through many pages of apps or having lots of folders, this should suit you well.

Seriously.

BONUS: This strategy is especially attractive if you have a wallpaper with a centered image, like the Earth wallpaper that's built in.

Edit: BTW, you need to be running jailbroken Beta 1 to do any of this. (redsn0w 0.9.5)
