What the title says :) I live in a country where we don't get Hulu, Netflix or even the possibility of renting TV shows from iTunes. All we get are movie rentals/purchases and, ... podcasts I guess.

Can I use an Apple TV for anything else?

Streaming your iTunes Library.
AirPlay from iPhone/Ipod/iPad, although this is minor since you can stream the iTunes Library directly.

Actually being able to use the iTunes HD purchases/rentals on a big screen is worth it to me. Also if you jailbreak, you can do XBMC to play other formats.

A good thing to ask yourself is do you want to stream music to your home theater. An option to do that is Airport Express--but perhaps a better and more versatile option is ATV--for the same price. :)
