If so, then it wouldn't be the first time they've fiddled with settings.
They're not getting rid of it. It'll most likely be in the next beta & most definitely be in the next official release.
The setting somehow appeared midday. This is weird haven’t updated or rebooted.. dont know what triggered it. I’m just glad it’s still an option!

I just tested this - whilst in my ears, my settings had Double-tap options for each Airpod.What triggered it is you probably had them in your ears and not in the case, i.e. they were connected to your phone.
