All of a sudden I don't have any sound and internal sound is not an option listed in sound preferences.
I had boom2 installed and found a way to uninstall that as I read it may be the problem. Also uninstalled cleanmymac as I read that could also be the cause.
Have done a backup and a complete reinstall of OS, still no internal sound option.
Tried toothpick in sound jack and also vacuum to suck out anything that might be in there.
Tried speaker jack in and out a few times. Tried reboot without wifi and bluetooth.
Trie the audio midi install but don't have internal sound as an option.
Nothing works!!

You didn't give a description of which model AIR you have. You don't get any sound from where - headphone jack, speakers [should say I'm not that familiar with the AIR]?

Can you connect a USB audio devices, such as a headphone amplifier or a USB DAC?

Does the headphone jack work? Does a microphone work via the headphone jack?

If none of these show up in sound preferences it would point to a hardware problem.

Hey I fixed it!
I recall the last time I had sound was using airplay with apple TV. So I reconnected them and played video and sound through apple tv, then when I disconnected, rebooted and my internal speakers are back. I realised this when it made the boot up sound for the first time.
Hope this helps anyone else that loses their internal speakers and sound.

I lost my internal speakers and so had no sound. Macbook air mid 2014 version. See my fix above.

Hi I have the same issue with my MBA mid 2013, i7 1.7 GHz 8Go. No sound comes from the speakers or the headphone jack since 2014 (a few days after the warranty period !). I can still use airplay or a usb DAC (this one http://www.materiel.net/carte-son/terratec-aureon-dual-usb-38129.html). I also made a clean install of Sierra so it is not a software problem (probably the motherboard should be changed but it is worthless). feso's solution didn't change anything.
