The Yotaphone 2 got released this week - it has a one normal screen, then the back of the phone is an e-ink 4.7" screen, very interesting.

The phone is admittedly expensive, but the tech is pretty exciting and reviews seem to be promising (camera aside).

Anyone checked it out?

I actually would buy the phone if it were released in the States carrier unlocked with a non-outrageous price (I'm pointing at you LG Flex!)

Only if someone lives in Russia or one of the few SE Asian countries it got released in.

I really hope they created a dual-screen, high-end, 10-12" 3:2 or 4:3 tablet using the same dual-screen arrangement. Probably even a direct alternative of the Surface Pro 3 - with an active pen, preferably. (The Android port of Inkspace is very slow, at least on my Note4.)

Interest in recently launched YotaPhone 2

February 2014:

… YotaPhone ……

December:

Has anyone heard about the phone with two screens, one on each side? …

The YotaPhone 2 …

I have to say, this is a really nice idea, and I wouldn't be miffed at all if something like this wound up on a future iPhone model. …

The concern I have is how durable that e-ink screen is. That's basically the body of the phone, and given how other e-ink screens wear over time, that might not be a good idea. …

… Yotaphone …

No, but I will. Since OS X Yosemite killed my interest in a modern iPhone (I have a first generation, refurbished) I'm taking a more open-minded approach.

I learnt of YotaPhone few days ago. From the dates at http://yotaphone.com/gb-en/press-center/ I imagined that YotaPhone 2 had been around for a few months. It's a pleasant surprise to discover that its release was so recent.

£555 seems reasonable. 32 GB storage.

(At http://store.apple.com/uk/iphone/family/iphone/compare it's £499 for a 32 GB iPhone.)

YotaPhone 2 review: niche and expensive, but seriously cool

Russian e-ink YotaPhone hopes it's second time lucky - CNET

Exciting, Interesting, And Innovative. Reviewing YotaPhone 2, 2014's Most Disruptive Smartphone

… the YotaPhone 2 is that rare beast – a phone that is radical enough to appeal to the geekerati, but polished and conformist enough that the regular consumers looking for something a little different will feel right at home with the handset. There is a premium to the price, but for the utility on offer, I think it’s a fair premium to pay. There are no hidden gotchas in the design or software, everything is tightly integrated, and YotaMirror’s ability to put anything on the back screen is the killer feature which is the making of the eInk screen.

I’m not done with the YotaPhone 2 just yet. Given the new paradigm of operation, I’m going to continue using it for the next few weeks and let you know how I get on with the handset in a long-term review here on Forbes. But for now I’m happy to recommend this new and innovative smartphone.

Disclaimer: Yota Devices supplied a YotaPhone 2 for this review.

Last year, I was actually excited by its potential. This along with the S6 edge are two of the most intriguing smartphones. And read recently that this phone will arrive in the US this year but for $600 and a little too late. Still for $600 with a near 2-year old SoC? The fact the cam is mediocre doesn't help its value either.

The e-ink reader on the back is cool although this technology would work better on a tablet. And you can find much better value elsewhere like from Huawei, ZTE, and BLU. We end up overpaying for unproven technology and for companies (unproven like YotaPhone or proven like Samsung) to recoup their R&D losses.

No idea how you would do it, but it would be great to have an e-ink screen incorporated with an amoled screen. The power you would save just reading texts or checking football results would be huge!
