No message alerts or sounds on iPhone when using another device

Since owning my Apple Watch I know that I don't get message tones coming through on my iPhone when I receive a text, which makes sense as it's supposed to be discreet. However, I've also noticed that if I have my Apple Watch turned off I still don't get a message notification or alert sound on my phone if I'm using my iPad.

Since realising this I have turned on message notifications on my iPad so at least I can see a banner pop up on my iPad so that I can see incoming texts, but I was wondering if there's a way to set it so that my phone still gives me an alert too?

Thanks, the only difference I have is that show previews is showing as only when unlocked on mine, but I'm not sure this would affect the sound alert. I'll try it and see.
