*sigh* This last week I was listening to a podcast where the hosts were talking about using focus modes and I realized that there's a lot of potential here and I wasn't using it. (I have an iPhone 12 mini)

So I spent some time playing with a Sleep, Work, and Personal focus mode. Somewhere along the way I realized that my phone was not notifying me of iMessages/text messages when the screen was locked/off.

I double/triple checked that notifications were allowed in my current mode. I even deleted the focus modes I made. I turned DND off. I rebooted my phone.

I updated my phone to iOS 17.1. I realized that my custom text tone option doesn't exist, and it was set to "none" and I changed it to the default text sound. (I thought this might be the issue, but I still wasn't getting notifications.)

I again double/triple checked that notifications were allowed.

When I get a message, and I'm on the home screen it dings, when I'm on the lock screen or the screen is off, there's no sound.

I got onto chat support with Apple and over the course of an hour we tried force restarting, and switching some settings. Finally, we reset the phone. Suddenly, everything worked. It was great... except that I spent the rest of the day tell app they had permission (or not) to do things.

So last night, I played with setting up some focus modes, but this time I only did a work and sleep focus mode. And this morning... I'm in the same boat I was yesterday.

When my phone is on the home screen I get notified about text messages. When it's locked, nothing comes through.

I'm feeling very discouraged right now... because people are sending me messages and I'm not getting notifications to my phone or even my watch. I really don't want to reset my phone again. (I didn't realize how much setup stuff I had to redo, it's a lot.) But I'm beginning to wondering if I just can't use any of the focus features on this phone right now because everything breaks.

Phone calls come through just fine. Alarms and alerts come through just fine. I turned on email notifications, and those came to my watch just fine. But text messages and iMessages do not notify.

Any ideas or suggestions for me to try at this point?

I'm probably asking the obvious, but is Messages still set to show alerts on the Lock Screen? Are you able to provide screenshots of your focus mode settings? That may be helpful.

Update: While waiting to get my oil changed this morning, I turned iMessage notifications off. Then I did a force restart on my iPhone. When it came on, I turned iMessage notifications back on, and it worked... until I got home. And now it's not working again.

I did have my phone hooked up. to carplay, but I was also getting notifications through carplay.

I'm attaching my focus mode screens here, but I have not enabled any of them today. (At least not on purpose.)

Okay, everything seems to be working again. So not sure what the glitch was after I did the reset, but things are now operating as they should be.
