The "detailed" view using Maps in CarPlay is no longer really a 3D view. It's more akin to the overview...and it even turns and rotates in a weird way. Anyone else driven crazy by this? Hopefully they fix this. Leave it to Apple to change something that was just fine.

It's a BETA.

Just submit feedback to Apple, probably just a bug.

This happened to me the other day just using the the maps on the phone. The phone got in this weird mode where the it was a 2D map that was at a weird zoom level and it seem to randomly rotate (not following which way you were turning). And then it would tell me things like "in zero miles, turn left" when I know that turn is 5 miles away.

I think it's safe to assume they're still working on it.

Noticed the same thing, got confused at first because I thought I disabled 3D, but it's definitely the way to go...
You can clearly see where you're going with that turn.

CarPlay is one of iOS 10s buggiest areas right now... I'm sure it will be fixed by the end of September.

I would image so. Wouldn't the cars system need an update to support iOS 10 properly? (I don't have a CarPlay enabled vehicle, so I don't know how all that end of things work)
No... with CarPlay the car is just a display for the phone - no update necessary. That's the beauty of CarPlay (and Android Auto) you get to take advantage of the phone OS updates which are far more frequent than the car manufacture's.

Oh ok. I knew CarPlay mostly runs from the phone and iOS. I just wasn't sure if there also was updating required on the other end as well. (Because the car system itself has to be CarPlay enabled and therefore maybe doesn't know how to communicate with iOS 10 perfectly yet due to not being released.)

I've never liked 3D view. You can't see the surrounding streets, it's far, far easier to make on the fly adjustments with the overhead view. I also don't like the rotating orientation, keeping it so that north is always up allows you to learn the area much better.

That said, I recognize not everyone has the same preferences I do. More choices are good. I imagine this is just a beta tweak.

I keep it in detail unless I want to make a change, then I switch to overview, then back to detail. However, it's pretty difficult to use overview to really zoom in/around. I usually have to zoom around the map on the phone for any real changes.

The way the Maps look/work in PB 2 is indeed quite different from iOS 9:

In iOS 9 the car arrow sign is fixed to the bottom-middle of the screen, just rotating the pointer from time to time, and the changing travel path just "feeds" itself into it. In PB 2 the same car arrow sign shifts horizontally across the bottom of the screen, so if you take a left turn, the arrow would shift to the right, so you get to see more of what's coming ahead. Useful, but takes some time to get used into after iOS 9.

The 3D is not the same indeed. It is somewhat there on the longer stretches of the road, but when you approach a roundabout or any other junction, it is pretty flat 2D. The sky line, present in iOS 9, which was enhancing the 3D effect in iOS 9, is also gone.

Overall so far, the functionality of PB 2 seems better than that of iOS 9, yet the new design, as it stands now, is nowhere near the polished one of iOS 9. The current beta version looks like they have taken their existing "pretty" maps, tuned down the light and flattened them with a truck. I hope this will improve by September.

So, after more use, I observe that 3D is fairly normal, except when approaching turns, when it zooms out to an overhead view. Hate it.

They have also removed the ski-line effect from the driving screen in iOS 10 beta, which makes it more difficult to perceive it as a 3D scene. Zooming in when approaching turns, roundabouts, etc. is definitely flatter (less 3D) now, as compared with iOS 9. As it stands now, driving screens in iOS 9 were much neater, with more map exposed. I hope they can fine-tune it further before the final release. Up till now Apple Maps were winning on simplicity and clarity of presentation, but if they carry on with their mapping "complications" it will take away its main appeal vs Waze or Google Maps, imho.

I have CarPlay in my Ford. The biggest problem by far for me, is that you can only search all contacts and all music when the car is stationary.

The Ford Sync system works better. I can search all my contacts by letter and my entire music library on the move.

With CarPlay all I can search while moving is recent contacts and recently played or added music. What the hell is that about ?

I don't always have a data connnection so using Siri is very hit and miss.

I also would like the option to use the Ford Sat Nav and still use CarPlay features.
