I have a 2014 MBA and I still can't watch YouTube videos at 1440P, unless I use 3rd party web browser such as Microsoft Edge. Microsoft Edge will play videos at 4K. But Safari, which is my main web browser, won't allow me to watch YouTube videos above 1080p60fps. Only times I use Microsoft Edge, is for testing purposes, when and if a specific website is not function properly.

Big Sur supposed to allow us to watch YouTube Videos at 4k, but I don't even have an option to watch videos at 1440P. My 10 year Dell Inspiron laptop, was able to play YouTube videos 6 years ago at 4k, and it has lower resolution than my 2014 MBA.

Only upside that I have noticed so far with Big Sur, is that YouTube videos are playing buttery smooth, with no stuttering and no buffering issues.

Requirement is that you have a 2018 or newer Mac with a T2 chip. T2 handles the video decoding for 4K H.264, H.265 and VP9 (the latter being used on Youtube).

works fine in 4K for me.

I can watch 4K videos, as long as I use 3rd party web browser and NOT Safari.

I simply want a native resolution support in Safari. Nothing more and nothing less. The video you posted, I can only watch at highest resolution of 1080 in Safari, but in MS Edge I can watch it at 2160. WITH OUT.... T2, T5, T42 or T1000 Chip.

All im asking, is ability to watch same video in Safari at 1440P.

Not asking for too much.

Ah shoot, I also did not know it is limited to the newer Macbook, was looking forward to installing Big Sur on the 2016 MBP, what a PITA... Why do they have to make things so complicated...
