Thought they would offer this as an alternative function to the hold switch, especially since the iPad got it and it needs it less than the iPhone (IMO). Oh well, back to Rotation Inhibitor once I can jailbreak again...

Does the iPhone rotating the wrong way while you're lying down REALLY annoy anyone else like it does for me?

really doesn't bother me, but i understand what you're saying. when i first used 3.0 i was getting thrown off with the screen rotating in email.. i was used to it always being portrait and moving the phone around between reading emails.

in my opinion if they were going to add a hardware button, i'd rather have one for the camera, or multitasking.. or maybe one that we could choose the purpose for.

I have heard a lot of people complaining about this happening, but I have never had it happen to me. I guess Apple felt that a mute switch on a phone was more important than a rotation lock one

Urgh that's really annoying. I was hoping that we'd finally have this feature. :( I like to use my iphone while lying down in bed so this would've been a very welcome feature.

It automatically rotating while I'm laying in bed is the most annoying thing ever! I was so use to laying in bed with it for over a year, then when 3.0 came out, almost a year later still not use to it!

The iPhone needs the mute switch, I'm glad Apple didn't change it (like they seem to keep doing with the home button double click...) But I think a software orientation switch would suffice.

There's an app (don't remember which one though) that has a pretty clever software orientation switch: when you turn your iPhone a lock will appear on screen, if you click it it will lock the orientation.

The Perfect Browser locks the orientation.

Why does the iPad need a rotation lock less than the iPhone does?

Well I've never personally used the iPad so I cant testify for myself, but in my imagination I would agree with the OP that the iPhone needs a lock more.

The iPhone is used frequently by people laying down in the horizontal position, thus making the rotation annoying. In my head I can't really seem to imagine needing to hold the ipad while laying down or in any other orientation which would make the ipad viewed sideways.... This is because the ipad is so much bigger, that it would become cumbersome.

The only thing that I can imagine would be if the orientation would switch around while sitting the ipad in your lap, or laying it on a "flat" table top. This depends on how sensitive the thing is.

But at most I can imagine the iphone needing it just as much, if not more, than the ipad. But again, never used it

Lock it!

Why does the iPad need a rotation lock less than the iPhone does?

Yeah, it doesn't take much imagination to see why: the iPhone is much smaller and lighter; you're just not going to hold an iPad lying on your back or side nearly as much (you will, but just not as long); also, the iphone already has a HUGE sales lead -- there's just a ton of them out there already, i.e., we've needed it for almost FOUR years!

Also, if anyone else has this problem: my sensor is screwed up (one side only somehow), and now it wants to rotate at the slightest tilt -- super-annoying! Anyway to reset or calibrate sensor?

But the iPad is much more made to be a reading device (books, magazines, even reading stuff online) because of the bigger screen, so it definitely needs it more than the iPhone.

I'm not saying it shouldn't be added to the iPhone, I just don't think the iPhone needs it more than the iPad.

+1 ... if they add one it'll definitely be a hardware switch to remain consistent.

I hope not, there's really no need for a hardware switch. Make a drop down toggle on the time bar that allows rotation, wi-fi, Bluetooth and the phone network to be turned on and off. It's easy. It's natural. It solves lots of problems at once. It's staggering it's still not there.

The app is MobileRSS Pro. It is a brilliant way of implementing screen orientation control.

That's it. :) I thought it was a great way of doing it too. It would be great if Apple added something like that. If Apple ever adds another hardware button to the iPhone I would prefer it was for the camera.

I knew there were Apps for this, but I was hoping for native... no biggie I guess -- as long as it works well!

I was just with a client who bought an iPad: niiiiice! You'll definitely be reading books and long articles more on a device of this size; but still, I probably spend just as much time using my iPhone (surfing, email, etc.), and in more "awkward" positions to boot. The iPad's not "heavy", but it's heaviER -- enough to prevent you from holding it in those "awkward" positions as long... that's all I think we meant by "iPhone could use it more" :)

I think a HW button would be cool too, esp. if it's user configurable. Btw (for those people who don't already know): one of the best tricks for using the iPhone's camera, is to place your finger on the button FIRST, and simple remove it when you want to take a pic -- MUCH easier, less shaking, and you can do it blind.

Agreed 10000000%!! ;)

If there's one thing I miss most from jailbreaking, it's Rotation Inhibitor. I really wish they didn't force people to jailbreak for little stuff like this!

Your logic isn't quite logical.

I really would like this App - I wouldn't know where to start with Jailbreaking. What are the implications if I just jailbreaked for this App?
