No output devices found

This just happened to me the other day, I plugged a pair of apple headphones in used them and then unplugged them. The next day I noticed that I was not getting any sound from my macbook air, no startup sound, no OS sounds, and even the headphones are not detected when plugged in. I've tried all the tricks and so far nothing.

Of course my mac is just out of warranty at the end of March and I'm going to imagine this is a small fortune to get fixed. Since last time I took it in while it was in warranty they wanted 900 bucks to replace my HDD

Anyone else run across this, I'm thinking of just throwing it on craiglist or ebay for like 900 bucks as is and buying a normal laptop

You've done the PRAM reset thing? last time I had an issue with no startup chime (audio device not found) - I had to perform it and then all sound devices were 're-recognized' next time I started my programs.

hold OPTION/COMMAND/R/P while the computer is OFF. stretch and press the power button - holding all 4 keys down still. let it start up to the grey screen.

*** and - just for me - wait for THREE chimes. not two. ***

I had to do it for 3 chimes - hopefully it works for you.

after the 3rd chime release all the keys and see what happens.

for me when it rebooted and i started garageband or Logic - it had to reconfigure some stuff it said on the screen - basically finding new audio devices. anyways hope it works!

Then something is wrong - that reset process (with the chimes) is built into every Macbook - and if you don't get any chimes - then hopefully someone else here on the forum will have a recommendation...

Does your machine see the audio hardware in system profiler? There was a thread from someone whose machine lost audio and video, but I don't think that's what you are experiencing.

It's also possible the problem is with the cable that connects the mobo and audio out port on the "port hatch".

Yeah I'm pretty sure at this point it's either that audio cable or the logic board or both as nothing I've done software wise has fixed the problem. Under audio devices it doesn' show anything and does not even detect the headphones if plugged in. I'm guessing at this point I'm going to have to just live with a soundless notebook

Oooh. System Profiler doesn't show the audio device. That does seem to be indicative of a motherboard issue. I guess if you had the time and inclination, you could try wiping the machine and re-installing; however, I don't think that would make much of a difference given that even the open firmware is not able to make a beep at startup, and that's closer to the hardware than the OS (of course).

Yeah at this point I'm guessing I'm SOL unless apple issues some kind of recall for this problem, which I think will be unlikely

I'm going to attempt to replace the cable myself, has anyone run across any guides to do this?
I know I need part 922-8380, which seems to be out of stock at ifixit.com

My Air did that; rang Apple who told me to reinstall OS. Arduous, and to no avail. Luckily I've got another few months' warranty left, so they're fixing it.

Perhaps find out about how much they'd charge you.
Or invest in a USB audio device. Although it would take up your single port...

They already quoted $900 bucks because they need to "return my macbook air to the condition it was in when I first bought it" before they will work on it. Well my Macbook has some dings from being well traveled so they want to replace the entire casing and some other things

that is one expensive repair charge. you stated earlier that your audio stopped functioning after inserting a pair of headphones?. im willing to bet that your computer is not providing audio due to a small piece of lint or dust that is caught on the sensor inside the headphone jack.... this is easily fixed by repeatedly plugging and unplugging that same pair of headphones until the dust is moved enough to finaly realize there is no headphones in the blasted thing. trust me this is a common issue with all macbooks. i have seen this more than once. give it a try and let me know what you find. you may also try to clean it out with some compressed air, i have seen that work a few times.

Thanks for the tips, I've tried both and still no luck getting audio back on my air. Of course now I can't find the repair part in stock anywhere either

This may be the No Output Device Found" Solution

After trying every solution on the net and being able to fix it once I know it was not a hardware problem. Some thing someone started with in one discussion lead me to look into the MIDI Setup. I have reboot my MBA several times and it has worked every time. I think this may be the fix.

Step One: Open Applications.
Step Two: Find Utilities folder and open.
Step Three: Find the Audio MIDI Setup icon and open.
Step Four: Under Audio Devices will be the IAC Drive. If it Greyed Out, Select and click on “Add Devices”.
Step Five: If the word BUS is in this box select and remove.
Step Six: Make sure that the “Device is online” is checked. Your IAC Driver Icon should be all red.
FINALLY RESTART. Your sound should be working now.

I have exactly the same problem like you described but only just happened few month ago. Like you I have tried everything including take the air to repair shop, they quoted for $1000 fix the problem. I didn't do it cozi I thought I might as well buy a new one if I have to pay that kind of money to fix it. Somehow, I just had feeling I can fix this damn thing so I started my search again. I am just wondering if you have ever got your computer fixed. I am willing to try the DIY ifixit.com. If you don't mind share some tips would be wonderful.
