No pop-notifications with textfree??

In fact I am getting no pop-notifications with any of my other apps - CNN or Sportacular. I've triple-checked notifications under settings and its all on. I have also un-installed and re-installed textfree. I get texts fine, and the sound comes on sometimes but there is no pop up. I updated to the latest firmware and then this started occurring.

I am running an iphone 2g.
