The chip set apple uses for the MacBook Pro and iMac allow for up to 4GB of memory. Therefore there is no reason for these computers not to support 4GB. I have no doubt in my mind that the 2GB limit now is due to there not being any 2GB modules and when 2GB modules come out the iMac and Macbook will support them easily.

Both the firmware and the kernel need to check for the presence of more than 2GB of RAM. This is exactly the same reason as why the Mac mini does not currently support more than 1GB (people have tried with 3rd party sticks). It will require a patch from Apple to enable this checking and Apple probably won't do that until they start selling 2GB sticks themselves.
