no recovery partition

installed the GM seed (wiped my Lion HDD and did a clean install) via USB stick.
i've noticed that it hasn't created a recovery partition, and thus "find my mac" won't enable as it needs it.

how do i create the recovery partition?

(and before anyone asks, yes I got the GM seed officially via the AppleSeed program and downloaded it via the MAP).

You can actually download an image of the recovery partition directly from Apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1464

But if it doesn't run on your system for whatever reason (it didn't work for me), then you can use the script from this page, which forcibly automates the process (it downloads the image from apple if you didn't download it already): http://musings.silvertooth.us/2012/03/restoring-a-lost-recovery-partition-in-lion/

Please note that this image won't work with any of the latest mid-2012 macbook airs or retina display models. The image hasn't been updated for those models yet and I imagine it will be once ML comes out officially.

After you've created the partition, you can head over to the App Store and goto updates to update that partition to the latest ML dev version of the recovery partition (it will say recovery-10.8). But the latest recovery partition never worked for me.

Right, there's no Mountain Lion recovery image yet, but you'll still need it to create a recovery partition. You're right; it is not there in the GM.

However, I assume it will be there when the official version is released, and that the existing RPs are upgraded accordingly when upgrading to ML.

When doing a clean install a new RP will be created just as when installing Lion from a USB stick.

Hmm... I noticed this as well the other day. The only way I was able to get the 10.8 recovery partition back was to re-install ML again (I'm a dev so I removed and reinstalled it on multiple macs).

Or the alternative, I suppose, is to wait for the official release (which is later this week anyway) in a few days, and Apple may release an official updated image of the recovery partition.

Sorry for not being able to help you on it now; but I do clearly remember seeing the update to the recovery partition at the time that I wrote the answer to you two weeks ago. Apple must have removed it due to the retail version coming out soon.

i'm running GM, which (so far) will be the same as the release version.
i really don't want to go thru the process of re-installing again.

the script created me a 10.7.2 recovery partition, so i hope an update option does appear!

I've re-installed ML so many times on so many different Macs, it honestly is the quickest way (about 20-30 mins) if you don't want to wait 3-4 days (or maybe a week?) for the new image to be updated. You won't lose any personal data; all it does is re-install the OS files.

The script just grabs whatever is on the Apple site, and I'm pretty sure Apple will update it--they have to, because they will be selling MacBooks with ML on them very soon. As to when they update it; it could be on release day, or it could be a week after it, who knows. It's up to them.

You will need to open Disk Utility to create a separate partition, then run the installer again, and install it on the newly created partition. After installation is complete, merge the two partitions back (so you can regain that partition and free space), and you will have your newly created recovery partition. I believe this should work, and this will help alleviate your fear of installing it on your working partition with all your personal files.
