Hello,
I've got a MBA 13" 2010 and ive been using it for streaming Air Video movies from an external hard drive to my iPod Touch. Now previously i used a Windows machine with the Air Video Server app running and set it up for use over 3G. And it did work until the fan went on the laptop.

Now the problem I have is if i let my macbook's screen turn off on it's own after the screensaver then all Air Video streaming stops. I have to get up and turn on the screen again for it to work. As you can imagine having to do that while using it on 3G is not practical. Not only does it stop Air Video, but i think it stops Screen Sharing, FTP and other things.

I'm running 10.6.7 normal edition (not server).

So the question is is that normal? Is there a way round it at all?

Thanks in advance,
Kris

I'm fully aware of them so looks like my only option is to have the screen never turn off. The problem I have is i want to close the lid... I've made it stop sleeping but the screen goes still stopping network. I guess its one step forward thanks.

Here's just the thing for you!

https://launchpad.net/insomniat

it disables the sleep mode in Apple Portables!!!! Even when the lid closes!

Yes Thankyou!!!! I used InsomniaX before which stopped physical sleeping on lid close, but not the unseen sleep mode.

I'll give this one a try then thanks :)

Glad i could help!

InsomniaX is old and are designed for PPC(or OSX Tiger and Below)

InsomniaT is rewritten to work with Leopard and Snow Leopard.

Well I installed it on a 10.6.0 machine and it didn't boot up after that.
Maybe it's because its a hackintosh or just doesn't like 10.6.0.

Oh well.

EDIT: Tried version 2.0.2 and it works!!! It works now i'm happy thanks for showing me insomniaT :)

EDIT2: Spoke too soon... It didnt reboot :(

Wait... I'm really confused. Which part is a Hackintosh? My impression from the original post was that this is occurring on a MacBook Air while streaming to an iPod Touch?

Wow...I searched and read and searched some more trying to figure out if there was a way to keep the computer available/on with the top closed and only came up with Insomnia X which didn't appear to be a good solution for new OSs. Never found Insomnia T.

Thank for the link but i wasn't having trouble. Version 3.0.0 didn't work out the thing became unresponsive right after installation. Had to do a safeboot and remove the kext. So tried version 2.0.2 and it worked until i rebooted. So eventually i tried Caffine and it seemed to work out for about an hour then things become slow over the network until I reopened the lid. That was pretty much the same result i got with 2.0.2.

And yea I sort of considered my hackintosh the same (hackbook air) and I planned to use it as my new media server to replace me old laptop (which conveniently didn't shut the screen off then i closed the lid due to hackintosh kext problems :p) but the original post was a MBA 2010 as that WAS what i would be using for a few weeks, and it's what i'm using now for Air Video at least for the next week..

Well I ordered a replacement part for that old laptop so probably won't be needing the InsomniaT for now but might do i'm not sure. Just worried that leaving on the laptop screen with the lid closed would cause some sort of overheating. Oh well. I'm wondering how Mac OS X Server works if network cuts off on screen closure? Oh wait I bet it doesn't happen on a Desktop (never had one). But OS X Server on a laptop? Might give it a whirl.
