I live in Kansas, and since there are no Apple stores in the state, there won't be any sales tax if I order from the online store, right?

I believe Apple is incorporated in all 52 states of the US. You might be better served buying from Amazon :)

Or just pay the sales tax and pat yourself on the back next time you drive on a highway, or attend school, or go to a State park or ... you know.

If only that's where our tax dollars REALLY went...

Even if you buy from a retailer that does not collect sales tax in your state, you are technically supposed to pay it when you file your taxes - depending on where you live of course. It is called a "Use Tax" and is payable on anything that is bought in one state and delivered for use in another. No one does it since there is really no mechanism in place to check that sort of thing.

With this week being tax week in the states, this sort of thing has been all over the internet.

I also believer that Apple will charge tax no matter where you are located, but put some stuff in your basket and hit "check out." It will calculate everything for you well before you have to enter payment info.

Places like Amazon do not charge tax in most states. Several other retailers are also like Amazon and do not charge you for tax.

They only charge sales tax to people who live in states with sales tax. People in places like New Hampshire do not get charged sales tax on Apple.com

Anyone in New Hampshire want to help me get a Macbook pro?

PM me!:D

This is a major feat given that there are only 50 states in the Union. ;) 48 of them are contiguous and lie between Canada and Mexico and two relative newcomers in Alaska and Hawaii.

Are you counting DC and Puerto Rico? :p

Unrelated to the Posting but funny Anyway:

Robin Williams once said:
"Canda's like a Loft apartment over a really great Party"
The upstairs neighbors are always yelling, "Can you keep it down a bit eh?"
:D

I prefer buying online with the retailers who do not have physical presence in the state I live in (i.e.. no sales tax). I pay enough of it with my income tax and I prefer not to subsidize things I don't believe in. Coincidentally, most of the technology items I buy tend not to be available on the brick and motor stores anyway.

For all you know some muslim insurgent will have you to thank for when he sees that bomb dropping down on him stamped with "PROPERTY OF US ARMY" on it.

Then again you only have yourself to blame when the sons of those "terrorists" detonated a bomb 5 metres away from you. I have no idea what will happen, but from many who lived to tell the tale your life literally flashes by you. Perhaps during then you will remember this sales tax you paid, and what really happened to the money

well, perhaps not being an American you aren't aware that it's federal income taxes that pay for "US ARMY" bombs and such; sales tax is levied by states and cities to pay for local things such as roads and schools and lots of slaries for bureaucrats and other such amazing things
