I have an iPhone 8. I send and receive text messages with others who have iPhones and others who have other brands of phones. With everyone who has an iPhone I believe I receive a sound alert when I receive a text. However, I have recently noticed that when my wife's nurse sends me a text from her Samsung I get no audio notification. I only now I have received a message by turning on the phone to see if the message icon is showing a number notification. Today I checked Settings; and the alert was, indeed, selected. I went ahead anyway and changed the alert sounds. Tested it with the nurse immediately, and it still didn't work. Her Samsung does set off the alert on my MacBook Air, but will not set off the iPhone. Ideas?

Go to Contacts and scroll down to her name and open it. Check to see that Text Tone is set to Default (or another sound)

Did. Text Tone set to an alert sound. And thanks! Didn't know/remember I could set the alert to an individual!

Maybe "do not disturb" mode ?

Else, you should check if you have sound when someone is calling you.
If you have a sound for the calls, try to check if text messages have no sound with everyone or only few people

Not sure how all that works. In Settings when I go to Do Not Disturb, I have two options only: Silence: Always and Silence: When iPhone is Locked. Right now I have it checked for When iPhone is Locked. Truthfully, not sure I know what iPhone Locked means. I selected this because it is not Always.

Locked is either a black screen or the "lock screen" that lights up but prompts you to log in with passcode or face ID or Touch ID
