To start off, this isn't an issue with HDR videos. While playing SDR videos, blacks are shown as gray on my 14" MBP. However, when the video is paused, or while you move the mouse cursor, then true blacks will appear. It's really easy to tell in a dark room. Anyone else experiencing this or know how to fix it?

It's probably a video quality issue or file compression issue that's causing that on standard videos.

I agree with bmcgrath , it sound like compression distortion.

I can reproduce it with this video on YouTube:

I tried to record it but it doesn't really show up in video. If you play this video in full screen, the backlight remains on. Once you pause and move your mouse cursor, the backlight goes off.
