iPhone X No Voicemail Notification

For some reason my iPhone X no longer shows the number of voicemails I have. I didn't even know it wasn't working till someone told me my voicemail was full.
What would cause this, and is there a simple fix?

Call your number, enter voicemail password, listen to some if you want or end call. Your voicemail should repopulate in the Phone app.
