No Wifi - not typical greyed out scenario

Hi

I've searched for wifi issues and they always seem to be related to the wifi showing a greyed-out 'no wifi' text in settings, couldn't find an answer to this one.

I have a 1st gen 8gb iphone. Was 1.02 originally.
I've upgraded many times over the past year, sticking with pwnage tool since that was released. Everything fine except wifi. It's been this way for the last few months. Just updated to 2.1, same.

There's no wifi icon at the top
In settings it states 'not connected'. I can go into the settings
'Choose a network' option shows, but none listed. My home wifi works fine with every laptop
I've tried resetting networks in settings many times over.
I've restored it many times.

I haven't got a clue, does anyone else? Is it some weird baseband thing? Maybe the wifi hardware is dead?

I've had essentially the same WiFi situation situation since updating my 1st gen iPhone to the v2 software. Only difference is that I'll get a WiFi signal for about 10 or 15 seconds after a restart, then nothing. Took the phone to a Genius Bar. They said the WiFi antenna has probably crapped out, although the timing of the failure in relation to the software update seemed very suspicious to me. No longer under warranty, of course. Oh well...

Sorry to hear about yours.

I don't even get that 10-15 secs! I've found you can buy iphone antenna replacements on ebay. Sound messy though.

Thanks! I just might give one of those replacement antennas a try. Seems much more civilized than throwing the phone off the side of a tall building.
