no wifi when locked on 5 gigahertz

I just installed my internet service. The router/rg is a pace 5286ac. When I'm on the 5 gig channel, the iPad will loose wifi when locked but will reconnect after unlocking it. I cannot receive notifications or iMessages also. I didn't have this issue with my last RG NVG589. Tried it with the 2.4 gig channel and it stays on but slower download speeds. Anyone else have this issue? iPad air 2
