What's it for?

You shouldn't have to jailbreak the thing at all. It should be fully working out of the box. If it isn't, somebody disabled the product, and that's the manufacturer's fault. It would be as silly as me having to break into a smartphone to install some applications that the phone manufacturer didn't approve of.

I just got an apple tv 2 and am wading through all the info about firmware, jailbreaking, etc. Not sure what the optimal firmware is (this is a big deal on iphones) or how to best approach streaming avis to the appletv, but I do find it intereting I can JB the latest...so I care! haha

The best optimal firmware on the atv2 is always the newest one

Is not like the iPhone

I just upgraded my atv2, JB'd it, installed XBMC and watched a show streaming from my MBA. Pretty cool! In fact, best media solution I've had in my house.

FYI for those who use Plex on atv2- it's not working right now on the newest firmware/jailbreak. looks like they have an update in the works so it should be soon. check their forums for updates.
