I had this issue too. I’m deaf in one ear so only use one AirPod in my good ear. I just toggled the accessibility setting off and on again and it fixed the issue.

Just tested it & it didn’t work at first (I thought I had the setting enabled), but needed to go into settings to re-enable it (must’ve turned off at some stage) & it then worked fine with either AirPod in.

i figured it out. normally i switch between modes from the control centre which kept asking to put both earbuds on to activate noise cancelling. i didnt realize you have to squeeze the 1 earbud itself to switch between modes. Essentially switching modes cannot be done from the device you are using but rather the bud itself.

FWIW I was able to switch using control center for one AirPod

Boo, so weird. I even unpaired and paired it back too. I have a second pair of AirPods I’ll test out soon and see if that makes a difference

Does using Siri to activate it make any difference - via both “Hey Siri” & holding down the Sleep button?

ok so toggling noise cancellation works within settings > bluetooth > airpod. it doesnt work from the control centre. those who claims it works for them, does it work via control centre? or are you doing it through the settings.

Wow it worked with Siri but I never use Siri other than setting alarms lol.

Success!

Just tested all methods of toggling with either L or R bud (Control Centre, Settings & Siri via both “Hey Siri” & holding Sleep button)... All worked for me.

I wonder if your AirPods have updated to the latest firmware? My firmware’s 2B588.

I just tested my second pair of AirPods pros and toggling from the control center worked. That being said it is currently on an older software version right now. Will update this thread again after it updates to the newest firmware.

Have to ask the obvious - is your iPadOS & IOS on iPhone updated to the latest?

yep. Keep in mind my second pair of AirPod pros worked with control center. Not sure why the first pair didn’t. Tried everything to get it working. My second pair is still on an older firmware so waiting to see if it still works once it updates.

Airpods updated to 2b588 and I’m able to toggle noise cancelling via control centre. Guess there was an issue with my first pair. I wonder if it made a difference by enabling noise cancelling prior to the update vs after the update.

^Good to see they’re working.

I’ve just disabled this setting btw.

It became annoying, as I found most times when removing one Airpod, I’m trying to listen to others talking & with NC, it went against that need.
