Help! My G4 powerbook is making the most awful grinding noises from time to time. They vary in intensity and volume from a hum to an ear piercing grind! When this happens, all applications freeze for the duration of the grind. Hard drive? Any ideas would be great!

That sounds like the hard drive to me. If I were you, I'd back everything up to DVD or an external hard drive, and take the computer in. Grinding noises from a hard drive generally indicate a mechanical failure, which can't be fixed (at a reasonable cost anyway), so if it is in fact the hard drive, you'll need to have it replaced. Is your PB still under warranty?

It would be a very smart move to back up all your important data. Then take your PowerBook into your local Apple Store. I hope that it is only the HD.
