Noisy C2D MBP hard drive ?

I've been using my MBP for over a month, and the hard drive has been making noise, which I figured was normal. But I just read on another forum that these drives are supposed to be quiet, which scares me.

My drive is not quiet in any sense, you can always hear when it's doing work, it's kind of distracting. Anyway I'm just wondering if you all have the same noise as me, because I want to make sure this drive isn't going to die on me and take all my data with it.

By the way I have the 160 gig hard drive.

My 160GB drive is extremely quiet. I can't recall ever hearing it at all - with my Powerbook I would occasionally (and faintly) hear its drive.

Just a tip - You are going to have to describe the sounds that your HD is producing in order to get more accurate help. You know this already but noise is obviously a subjective area.

That being said let me also say that you should always back up your DATA regardless of whether you feel that your HD is failing or not. Always. Just do it.

About your problem though just tell us more or even better use Garageband to make a recording of the sounds you are hearing and let us try and tell you if this is normal.

I also have the 160 GB drive and I can hear it too. It's pretty normal I suppose.

what is quiet!?!?

There are so many discussions about noise this and noisy that - and there is always a bunch of people that say that their XX is quiet and a bunch of people say that theirs are noisy as hell. Also the harddisk poll above, stupid questions: does it make audible noises? Or is it very quiet? What the hell do you mean??!?!?

Ok, my 160 HDD is quiet I guess. And what does that mean? That means that I rarely notice it, if I have iTunes on or am in a location where there is some noise - like office-background. I dont recal hearing any HDD noise.

When I am in a really quiet environment, no noises whatsoever, no itunes, YES - i can hear tickering-kinda-noises from the hard drive. MAYBE I can even convince myself that it is loud noises, since I am focusing on it. BUT does that make it noisy? Audible sounds? What should I vote in the poll - I still dont know!!

So PLEEEEZE, define quiet and noisy in some way, before going on in these endless noisy, quiet, kinda-loud, irritating-noise, almost-soundless - discussion.

If it doesnt ruin your day, just forget about it:
YOU WILL ONLY GET MORE PARANOID, FRUSTRATED AND UNHAPPY WITH YOUR COMPUTER.

and, honestly, if something really was wrong, if it really was too noisy to your taste. You wouldnt doubt a second, you would take your machine under the arm, walk straight down to your apple store and start yelling fourletterwords at the first poor guy in an apple t-shirt...

Note that all harddisks make noise when they read or write. And with a quiet computer like a MBP, you're going to hear this.

Ok here is a recording with the sounds its making. You should probably turn your volume on your mac all the way up, and itunes too.

WHen I had them both turned all the way up it was still a little quieter than in real life, but close.

By the way, I'll mention this was me booting up photoshop CS3.. which takes over 10 seconds might I add, I find this strange considering this computer should really be blazing fast.

All hard drives make noises, regardless of what they advertise. the "fluid bearing" refers to the lubrication they use for the motor, not the read/write head. Thats why your computer doesnt sound like some Pentium with its shrieking hard drive.

CS3 is not the method of benchmarking. It is still in beta. Does it boot up slower? This probably might be more subjective though, cause you'll probably think yes.

My dad's Dell desktop HD is failing. It sounds like a rattling fan (failing hard drives click and make very loud noises), but i know its the hard drive because when the HD is working the sound changes. The computer still works though...albeit a bit slowly.

I agree that most make noise but considering 10 out of 14 people who voted said their hard drives made very little, this worries me slightly. Not that I should really be worried since I'm obviously still under warranty, and my stuff is backed up, just not every single day.

Unless you change the poll to list exact decibels and use the related tools to figure it out, this poll will always be subjective.

Mine makes noise. If i stick my ear to it I can hear it making some noise, or when I boot up I hear noise as well. It's quieter than say, my desktop hard drive.
