noisy fan after Snow Leopard upgrade

My 24" iMac has been running so quietly since I got it a month ago. Yesterday I successfully upgraded to Snow Leopard, and since then from time to time the fan (I assume its the fan) goes crazy and makes such a noise that the table its on vibrates. That can't be good! I have Googled this problem, many other people have it, but any solutions they found aren't working. e.g. reinstall iStat Pro etc. Any ideas? Last time I called Apple UK (about something else) I was waiting 40 minutes just to talk to someone who then passed me on to someone else who then passed me on to someone else, who then gave me another phone number!!! So I'd rather sort this myself.

I had the same issue w/my MBP - the fan was running rampant to keep the cpu cool. Try resetting your PRAM and SMC - that cured my problem.
