Noisy fan on PC graphics card when in OSX

I have a 7300gt which I use when in OS X and an ati 4870 when in bootcamp / windows.

My problem is that the fan on the ati when in os x is quite noisy, does anyone know anything I can do to fix this?


Deriving from this question, if I were to flash my PC 4870 with the apple firmware / bios, I read that there were some things that wouldnt work (i.e. audio over HDMI) - does this mean that these things wouldnt work in OS X with the reflashed card or in Windows aswell?

Buy Accelero S1 v.2 - it works great with HD4870 even without any fan.

the card is loud because its a PC card, and OSX does not recognize it, so it turns on the fans on high to not overheat it (because it cant read temps from it)

if you flash it with modified rom, you should both be able to use it in OSX, and get rid of the noise

flashing the card does not affect anything in windows

Ive just had a quick look at the zeus flashing tool.

It has a 'flash' tab and a 'firmware' tab.

As I understand it, I extract the rom for my card under windows then click 'flash ati' inside the 'flash' tab of zeus (providing the location of the rom I extracted). It then manipulates this rom or something and makes it 'mac compatible'?

I am at a loss as to what the 'firmware tab' does? (Says 'Edd EFI to your firmware')

If you were to flash with the rom you extracted, nothing would have changed, don't you agree?

"flash" means "write firmware to card"

In the firmware tab you browse for your extracted rom, modify it and save as a new rom, then you flash with that rom.

EFI = mac support.

Ok so I successfully flashed my 4870 last night. After playing portal for an hour in OS X the fan speed continued to be very loud for the next 45 minutes(!), but even after then it was still noisier than id hoped.

1 - Can I control the fan speed or see the temperature of the card from inside OS X? Ive googled and found nothing.

2 - Failing point 1, Can I mod the firmware of my new EFI-Enabled 4870 and give it some different fan speeds at different temperature thresholds?

2. Yes. You will need RBE and Win to do it, search how to in 4870 (or 4890, I don't recall now in which one it was described) flashing thread.
