Nokia 9 Pureview—April Fools Joke?

I just saw this article over on Android Central for cases for a phone I haven’t run across before that looks like this, credit to GSM Arena here





That has to be a joke. It’s also supposed to be running last year’s Snapdragon 845.

April Fool’s Day on the internet is such a weird thing. The thing is...the links to the cases do go to actual products on Amazon.

That camera array The cases look absurd.

I was half tempted by it given thta it runs Android One and Nokia's cameras of previous years have been pretty solid.

However it is not quite up to the task it seems. The camera app is buggy and slow, with images taking over ten seconds to process (every snap) and the camera app just closing itself or not loading at all frequently.

The in screen finger print scanner has also been touted as the worst one on the market.
It has an attractive price, given how much these other flagships are, but it's not quite there.

That...that...what? No. It just can’t be. I read the description and saw the so called sample photos, which were quite ordinary. Who in their right minds would put that many lenses on a phone in order to produce the same effect you could get with just a bit of finesse with the software? Oh and let’s just round it off with last year’s processor!

I have an old HTC 10 that sounds more appealing. Heck, I know my iPhone SE is more appealing. This sounds absolutely appalling. And the Android flagships unfortunately do come down in price to affordable levels if you give them enough time.

I think it has last years processor as it has been in production for some time.
However even being pushed back into this year has not helped it, as it seems like it is not at the standard it really should be.

The sad thing about the camera(s) is that even with that many lenses, they all do the same thing. When a photo is taken, they all just take a snap of the same thing which is then layered and processed into a single file.
There is no wide angle lens or anything like that.

Portrait shots did look promising from what I have seen in reviews etc, but the likes of the Pixel 3 and S10 / XS/R are still bettering this output with images straight from the lens.

I want to really get behind the new Nokia as a brand, but they haven't got the balance right just yet.

It’s not really Nokia, they are licensing their brand to another company and desperate times....

The penta camera isn’t even their innovation it is owned by a company called light and they are partnering with Sony and Xiaomi next. So yeah interesting times.

Yeah it's not the actual Nokia, but it's a Finnish company full of ex-Nokia people so there's a bit more to them than just being another licensee. However, I also wish they had more of the real Nokia camera magic. While I've occasionally been tempted by their phones, there's always something that puts me off from getting one.

Ex Nokia employees from pre Ballmer Nokia or post Ballmer Nokia, two very different companies.

It’s not the same Nokia that started it all, that’s for sure.

Going by reviews from Mr.Mobile and Android Authority, it isn't all that great and yep it does use last year's Snapdragon 845, the phone was in development for quite sometime and I think they simply could not get the order of of 855 chips in time.

It's a shame it's not translated into reality as I quite liked the sound of it when it was first announced... however, I am hoping the upcoming 8.1 plus (international version of the linked phone below) will be the real deal again, a 48MP 1/2" sensor should hopefully herald a return to excellent image quality as was seen with the 808 preview and Lumia 1020...

Definitely not - but I seem to remember reading the overly complex R&D set-up of Nokia was actually one of the things that contributed to it's downfall, they had lots of teams competing internally, and for every phone that was released, several were (fully) developed, which ate up their R&D budget extremely inefficiently. I liked a lot of the exotic designs they came out with, but I think the smartphone market is now so cutthroat you need to be laser focused on marketable features and developing specific, focused models.

A lot of their midranges do seem pretty solid, if actually quite unimaginative and bland in design - why I was quite excited about the 9 when announced. Hopefully if they build on the old L920 tech for the 8.1+ they should be able to get some decent results for only a little outlay. I believe the tech in the 9 was actually licensed from light, they just shrunk it down to fit in a smartphone.
