Non "Apple approved" memory heatsink in Mac Pro 1,1?

Has anyone put in memory with regular heat fins/sinks as opposed to the "Apple approved" ones? Is there any difference temps wise or "acoustically"?

...going into a MacPro 1,1.

In my 1,1 I have 4 sticks of non Apple RAM and 4 sticks of Apple RAM, don't notice any difference in temps really. They're all pretty standard across the board

I have two modules with a "big" heatsink on only one side of the module and two modules with no "big" heatsink at all.

My MacPro is currently out of reach, but iirc the temperatures for those modules are in the range of 65°-80° Celsius. However - i have never experienced any problems (like e.g. crashes etc.), even under load. Acoustically i did not notice any difference to running the MP with the original Apple modules.

In mine I have 8 "non Apple heatsink" modules and they're fine from about 2 years. No additional noise or other downsides. All maintenance I do is dust removing once in a month.

AFAIR you've bought them used (for darn good price BTW), so you don't know their "mileage" and previous usage conditions. Besides, chips are dying sometimes, you know

after i got my 1,1, went with OWC ram, and after the third RMA in a row for faulty ram, got feed up and pulled a couple standard sticks out of a PC server with the normal/slim covers. happened to be samsung chips if that matters.

runs same temp as the Apple sticks i pulled out, never had a problem in several years of use.

unfortunately, yes, there is a difference.

So, I went ahead and got 4 sticks of "regular" heatsink equipped chips and stuck it in my mac.

Not good! Right from the get go. It boots and runs "fine", but temps on those sticks are constantly in the high 70's/low 80's compared with 50's/60's on the approved heatsink'd chips. End result? Fans constantly running at 800-1200rpm (vs. around 500 previously).

So, too anal? Maybe not... one of the beauties of the mac pro is the near dead silence...

So, it's back to ebay they will go... if anyone is interested in them soon, ping me and i'll cut you a deal!

Did you properly reset PRAM and SMC after adding the new memory? I have temperatures around 78-80°C on my "standard heatsink" equipped memory modules right now and the rear fan is spinning at relaxed 619 rpm according to smcfancontrol (rest of the system between 499 and 599).

yep, anal as i am, I did both twice...

it's not that big of a deal i guess, but i'm just anal enough to not like it always running at an elevated speed, even tho it's not much.

I'm running a 1.1 with 8x 4GB Dell (Hynix) DIMM's in it that have small copper heatsinks. No issues at all.
