Non-Apple Monitor for a Powermac?

Hello all,

I am thinking of getting a Powermac G5 (either the dual 2.0 or dual 2.3) and need to get a new monitor to replace my aging CRT. Regretfully I cannot afford the $700 U.S. for the entry level Apple LCD and was wondering what others may have chosen as a non-Apple LCD alternative for their Powermac? I was thinking of something in the 19 or 20" range, yet if that gets back up to ~$600-700 U.S. I would have to drop down to the 17" range (I would like to spend between $250-300 U.S. if possible). I have heard that Dell makes a good monitor that compliments the Powermac, is this correct?

I recently replaced my aging 17" CRT with a 19" LCD (Samsung 930B) and have been very happy with it. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles that others may have, but all in all it's a pretty good monitor and Samsung's dead pixel policy is really good as well.

edit: It appears that most people tend to like the Dell monitors on this board. I was interested in checking them out but I didn't want to buy anything without physically seeing the picture quality. I don't know of any places that actually sell Dell monitors around you but I'd compare a few of them if I were you.

I have a Dell 19" LCD that works great with both my PC and my Mac. Any monitor will work (and cheap is good) but remember, you get what you pay for. If the CRT works, you can still use it as a secondary monitor. PM come with dual capable cards.

I would recommend Dell 2005FPW, Dell 2001FP and Dell 1905FP in that order. Like the above poster said, check out the coupons before you buy. You are looking for the 35%-40% off coupons or the 20%-30% off plus $50-$70 off accessories.

The Dells are nice because they use 8-bit panels which produce better color than most LCD's which use 6-bit panels. They also have built in USB hubs which are not as common in LCDs as you would expect (little added cost but a lot of added appeal).

I have a 2005FPW that I use to run my Mac and my PC. The the Mac is connected via DVI and the PC by VGA and at the touch of a button on the display, I am switching between the two of them. Well two buttons actually. I have a USB switch so that I can share the keyboard and mouse between them.

I recently bought an End-of-Life dual 2ghz Power Mac and am using it with my old 17" CRT.

When some new Dell coupons become available I will hopefully get a 2005FPW. It uses the same panel as the Apple 20" display (some of the other circuits differ). Also, it can be turned on it's side by pivoting the screen on the stand. A nice touch...

I also have a Samsung 19", but on my Dell can't remember what model. I bought it with DVI so I could hook up an Intel mini to it when they become available. It replaced my 4 year old 15" Samsung LCD which went to the kids' computer. My experience with Samsung CRTs is also flawless. Boring, but flawless. Other brands have let me down, but Samsung monitors are excellent value.

Lots of folks here seem to be liking the new Dell monitors, so you might want to look over there too.

Dell monitors are great and with the right timing and coupons can be very cheap. I have a 20" widescreen and love it.

Do a quick google search for Dell coupon codes, they can change daily.

This is true. Dell makes GREAT monitors and I would highly reccomend them. Also, you can get the 20" fairly cheap at times... anywhere from around $500 to $350. Best of luck on your new purchase!

I use a Dell 2005FPW on my Windows machine and it looks great. I would get one for my upcoming Power Mac Quad, but I prefer my Mac and display to match, which is why I am getting the ACD 23-inch.

But yeah, go for the 2005FPW. It's a great monitor at an awesome price!

I have the Dell 2405fpw hooked up to my PowerMac and it is awesome. I have an old Viewsonic 18" LCD hooked up as the second monitor but with the 24" Dell, I don't use it that much.

I have a silver 19 inch Proview Monitor that I could sell. Almost the same color as the PowerMac!

I'm running a 17" NEC 1735NXM LCD and a 19" Samsung SyncMaster 955DF CRT on my new dual core 2.0 PowerMac. They both work and look great. At the moment, I have the LCD hooked up via a normal VGA cable, but I just picked up a DVI cable from eBay for $9 that should be coming in the mail soon; hopefully, I'll notice a difference in clarity .

if you go to http://www.newegg.com you can find a lot of 19" monitors around the $300 range. Just make sure it has a DVI input. I was going to buy a samsung or NEC LCD from them, but dell had the 2005FPW on sale so I couldn't say no to that price.
