Non-Glare Screen Option?

Based on my experience today with it on the train, the glare kills it for me in terms of using it as an e-reader. I'm going to try the anti-glare film that's on Tekserve seems to have in stock to see if it improves the situation. As of now, though, my Kindle2 lives to read another day.

I doubt that they will come out with a physically anti-glare display version. If anything they will offer an anti-glare screen protector in the store like they do with the iPhones.
I tried the ipad today and I really hate the glare, so I'm going to get an anti-glare screen (I have one on my iphone).
It was a great relief to go back to my Kindle and read. I won't give it up, and I hope Amazon understands that there's still a market for Kindles. They should lower the price.

No. It affects how the the image is displayed and I prefer the current screen. (I avoided the word quality on purpose since that is subjective).

It bothers me that Apple did not offer this option and makes me wonder "what were they thinking!"
Eighty percent of my iPad use will be outdoors - car, cafe sidewalk, backyard, mall, beach, trail, park, etc.
Some here have said direct sunlight makes it 100 percent non-usable.
Once the mainstream user starts using this outdoors, I think there will plenty of complaints to eventually persuade Apple to meet the demand.
Using one of those plastic stick on's is not my thing. I don't like the feel or look.
Any further thoughts?

FWIW I prefer matte desktop monitor.
But a simple matte screen won't make an LCD usable in sunlight. In fact matte can be worse in sunlight as the direct sun hitting it will scatter in every direction making it impossible to avoid the contrast killing effect and glare. With glossy you might by able to angle to avoid most bad reflection and enjoy greater clarity:

Nope, not gonna happen either as Apple has taken any and all screen protectors, ipod/iphone/ipad, out of their stores and will not sell them as of a few weeks ago...gonna have to find them elsewhere.

My sentiments exactly. After trying to read a book on the iPad I pulled out my Kindle2 and it was night and day, favoring the Kindle. The glossy screen on my uMBP never really bothered me because I can adjust the angle of the screen to minimize glare. For some reason I have a harder time doing that with the iPad. On the train it's not even the sun coming through the windows that nails it, but the overhead lights are causing the most glare.
I tried one of the anti-glare screen protectors just now (Xgear from Tekserve) and I just couldn't get the thing on without dust/unsqueegee-able bubbles. I used to use these things on the long string of Windows Mobile devices I had pre-iphone and never had any trouble installing those.
While the display on the Kindle isn't itself completely immune to glare, it's much more so that the iPad.
Ok, so I use the iPad for browsing and other assorted stuff and the Kindle for reading. The kindle is small and light, so no big deal.

I went from the Barnes and Noble Nook to the iPad. And I was happy with the iPad until the next morning when I went outside to have a cup of coffee and read. I wear sunglasses that have polarized lenses and I could see absolutely nothing on the ipad. I thought it was turned off. So, I took off my glasses and it wasn't much better, what I did do was turn the ipad horizontally and found that I was able to see the ipad and it was absolutely clear! I know it's a little bit of a pain to have to turn your ipad horizontally when your outside but for me that option works. I would at least suggest trying it. I am however usually under a covered patio when I'm outside though so I usually don't get direct sunlight, but I am going to check and see if this works that way as well. Hope this helps! Also, powersupport has an Anti-glare film out that I am going to try, who knows maybe I can get my ipad vertical when I'm outside! lol

It gives me eye strain and a headache. Actually makes me feel like my eyes a swollen.
Funny how I remember distinctly having these same symptoms with an early VGA CRT, years ago before they invented anti-glare tubes.
Also, The screens on the Kindle type e-readers are set for a big contrast boost later this year, which will make them even better e-readers.
I'm going to definitely go the antiglare screen protector route and just see if it helps.

It's marketing. Apple thinks the glassy displays make it more "magical" and will appeal to more eyeballs. (HP is guilty of this now too.) Seriously. Kind of like TV's that have their color temperature boosted cool blue so they appear "brighter" and stand out more on the showroom floors, but are then inaccurate from true color.
If we haven't seen a non-glare screen on the iPhone by now, we're not going to see one on the iPad either. Get aftermarket anti-glare film or... don't buy one.
