Non-Mac recipients can't open mail attachments

Hi,

Has anyone of you observed problems with mail attachments in Sierra?

Two days ago I installed Sierra and since then I've heard from mail recipients that they can't open attachments I sent them. This doesn't seem to be restricted to a specific file type, the problem occurred with .xlsx (small test file containing only one word) as well as with .zip files. I haven't tried other file types.

The problem has occurred with recipients using Exchange in Windows, an Android tablet and a web mailer. In Thunderbird on Windows, however, the file could be opened successfully. I haven't seen it myself, but from what these users describe, they see the paper clip icon in the list of their mails, but in the mail itself there is no file to open.

Mail is set to send attachments Windows-compatible and I'm also using the Anti Inline plug-in from Clive Galeni.

Is this something that others have experienced as well? I've googled the problem, but I couldn't find anything.

In the meantime I've done some further testing by setting up an account in Outlook in a Windows VM. I can in fact reproduce the problem. An attachment sent from Apple Mail does not show up in Outlook. There's no paper clip icon shown for the e-mail, and in the message it body there's an image placeholder with the following text:

"The linked image cannot be displayed. The file may have been moved, renamed, or deleted. Verify that the link points to the correct file and location."

The attached test file was not an image, it was a small .xlsx file.

Any ideas?

I have the same problem indeed! Actually,I cannot see attachments in incoming email. This does not affect IOS 10 devices, so I am forced to look up the attachment on the iPhone or iPad and send it on. Disastrous. I checked Apple Forums and the problem does show up so I filed a complaint.

I have the same problem.
But when i uninstall Clive's Anti Inline plug-in and restart Mail, the attachment is shown in Microsoft Outlook on a pc.
When i only disable the plug-in, the attachment is not shown in Microsoft Outlook.
I think it's a plugin problem. I reported it to support@clivegaleni.com, but there's no reaction …

In my case the problem disappeared after I uninstalled the Anti Inline plug-in (disabling wasn't enough, I had to really uninstall ist). I sent several e-mails to the developer asking if he knew about the problem, but he never replied.

I noticed the same problem today, and (up until now) had the same plugin installed.

Funnily enough, if I only had ONE recipient, the attachment stayed attached. Only when adding CC: people the attachment would be ripped out.

There is no update of Anti Inline Plugin and also no reaction from Clive Galeni to my bug reports …

The point of my post is that the developer is not responding to emails anymore related to his software.

If you remove the plug in, do you still have the same issue?

I just sent a .pptx file to a colleague (using a Windows 7 PC with Outlook 2010) and he had no trouble opening it. Just attached as per normal with Mail.

I have the same issues and no response from Clive Galani. I have sent emails from mail and through his site. Tried to post on his forums but never shows up. I am getting more angry by the day.

I have updated to 2.5 and it does not work with the latest sierra update. When I try to install and restart my macmail. It says "plugin removed" please update for compatibility with mac mail 10.2.

I hear ya. He has been very helpful in the past. I did find a solution through @mailplugins. https://code2k.net/products/mailpluginfix/

This worked with no issues and mac mail is working properly again with Clive's attachment working just fine

The plugin may basically work with this workaround, but are attachments in emails to windows outlook users visible?

I did one test to an outlook user and the attachment was ok and not embedded.

Like others in this thread, I've been trying to contact Clive Galeni since the Sierra update rendered the plugin unusable, and I too have not received any reply. The plugin website is still yet to be updated.

Same experience here, the developer is not reachable.

Btw I just ran into case when an email sent with Anti-inline doesn't show attachment on the recipient end. Outlook shows, for like half a second, that there is an attachment and then the line at the top of the email body that holds attachments disappears. After this incident, I'm not sure I want to play Russian roulette not knowing for sure if a recipient will get the attachment.

The guy has updated his site (and the plugin) for High Sierra. The problem I'm having is that I can't turn it off... even after fully removing the plugin. Mail still sends all attachments at the bottom of the email instead of inline. I WANT to turn it off and have the Apple default method (inline) for the sake of this discussion. The plugin obviously injects some code that applies even after the plugin itself is removed.

I removed the Bundle folder from the ~/Library/Mail folder.

I tried everything I can think of to get it to revert back to the default behavior, but no amount of preference deleting or Terminal scripts would work. Oddly enough, restarting the Mac added the "Always Insert Attachments at End of Email" item back under the Edit/Attachments menu and the default behavior is back.

A restart shouldn't be necessary, but it is what it is.
