Noob Here: How to check iphone firmware?

I recently bought an iphone (my first one) and want to unlock it. The owner said he thinks its 2.0 but i want to confirm it. I read on the interent you enter in the emergency number menu this weired number like *3001#12345#* but i doesnt work, when i touch call, it doesnt do anything

what are some other ways i can go about finding out the firmware on the iphone? if any?

If you can get into the phone and see the home screen, then you are able to check this following xUKHCx's method. If you can't then you are going to need to activate the phone with AT&T or unlock it (note not jailbreak) and use it with T-Mobile. Those are the only two nationwide (and perhaps the only) carriers that can use the iPhone.

yes, but inorder to unlock it, do i not need to know the firmware of the unit? or is there a way to just unlock it?

I *BELIEVE* that you can unlock, jailbreak, and upgrade the firmware to the latest in one fell swoop. You do this by downloading a copy of the 2.1 firmware, and then by downloading and running Pwnage using this firmware image. Then follow its instructions to upload it to the phone using iTunes.

Given this method, it doesn't much matter what firmware is currently on your unusable phone, now does it?

P.S. -- You may also need to hunt down a copy of the baseband firmware for the iPhone so that Pwnage can modify it as well in order to accomplish the unlock. I don't have a first-gen iPhone so I don't know for sure. Surely someone with more hands-on experience can chime in.
